Is Mr. President's promise of additional 6,000 MW of electricity in 18 months achievable?
Government tackles water shortage in Makurdi
Commissioner for water resources and environment, John Ngbede told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi last Wednesday that the present capacity of 18,000, cubic metres even if maximally utilised, cannot meet the daily water needs of Makurdi residents.
"To be candid, the volume of water pumped from the water works is far below its capacity and efforts have been directed at its speedy expansion,'' he admitted. Some parts of the metropolis are now experiencing acute water shortage.
Water vendors have cashed in on the situation to make brisk business, raising the price of a jerry-can of water from N20 to N30.
The commissioner said the shortage might have been aggravated by the roads rehabilitation going on in the township.
He pleaded for time to reverse the trend, saying a large chunk of the proposed N2.5 billion budget allocation for the ministry, would be used to improve on water supply.
