Tanker explodes in Port Harcourt
A tanker carrying petroleum products, Monday night exploded at a road intersection in Port Harcourt, burning two persons beyond recognition.
The incident occurred at the Eliozu junction along Airport Road by the East-West Road. The petrol tanker exploded while trying to make a U-turn, hiting an electric pole, which caused its contents to spill. The resultant fire was said to have engulfed the whole place, as other passing vehicles were torched by the raging inferno.
The two victims, whose identities could not be immediately ascertained, were said to be a young girl and a driver. The vehicle they were in was said to have caught fire. One other person was seriously injured in the incident.
As a result of the explosion, the neigbouring communities were thrown into darkness, as public power to the area was immediately terminated by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), therefore making rescue operation difficult.
The remains of the victims were taken to a mortuary in the state.
Some sympathisers blamed the tanker driver for over-speeding, which according to them was responsible for the accident.
