Administration of justice especially at the level of magistrate courts in Lagos State is set to receive a boost, as the state government is strengthening its human capital and infrastructure.
Governor Babatunde Fashola, speaking at the submission of the report of the "Judicial Reform Committee" set up by the government in August last year, disclosed that government is currently building new court complexes in parts of the state and furnishing them with appropriate facilities.
The committee was among other things constituted to look into ways of dealing with the challenge of quick dispensation of justice at the magistrate courts as well as enhancing the performance of officers at that level.
Fashola equally revealed plans to computerise the operations of the various magistrate courts in the state and training of personnel on the use of ICT to enhance their capacity to dispense justice.
Although the report just submitted is yet to be made public, the governor expressed hope that its implementation will go a long way to tackling some of the challenges facing the administration of justice in Lagos State at the grassroots with hundreds of cases.
The chief judge of Lagos, Augustine Alabi in his remarks, described the step being taken by the government as one that will bring relief and fast-track the process of justice.
Chairman of the committee, Fola Arthur-Worrey, who thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve the state in that capacity, noted that although the committee may not have proffered solutions to everything, the recommendations, if implemented will help to address the challenges the magistrates are facing.
