FCTA orders mechanics, vulcanisers out of filling stations
Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has threatened to prosecute owners of undeveloped plots and filling stations who harbour mechanics within the city.
Umar handed the warning in Abuja while reacting to the proliferation and resurgence of mechanics in the federal capital city.
He lamented the flagrant disregard for the FCT laws and regulations, saying the administration has established an enforcement team under the supervision of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) to check the situation.
He explained that the administration may be forced to revoke any land used for purposes it was not earmarked.
His words, "every square metre of land in Abuja is planned and well designated for and we can not allow some few individuals to derail such fantastic government's plan for selfish interest."
The minister stated that the enforcement team will be inter-departmental in nature and strengthened to make more impact by taking care of all grey areas in the city management.
According to him, the team will comprise of the Abuja Environmental protection Board, Directorate of Road Traffic Services, Development Control, Urban and Regional Planning, Parks and Recreation, Monitoring & Inspection as well as the Legal Services Secretariat.
Umar restated that the administration has decided to make it a department under AMMC, but will first start as an enforcement team that will naturally metamorphosed into a full fledged department to guarantee continuity.
“This will address immediate problems emanating from vegetation/construction wastes in the Federal Capital City,” he added.
The minister, however enjoined managements of all the filling stations in the city to streamline the number of mechanics and vulcanizers to enable such facilities serve as service stations as planned for in the Abuja master plan to take care of minor vehicle repairs like changing of engine oil and mending of tyres.
He promised to make Apo Mechanic village more habitable and attractive to encourage the full relocation of mechanics and parts sellers.
Umar emphasized that the FCT Administration is already thinking of better alternatives because no city can operate efficiently without such services being effectively rendered; adding that appropriate plots of land will be sought in all the districts of the city to take care of them.
