Over N1 billion is to be spent by the  government of Kano State to construct two major roads in Sabon-Gari area of Kano metropolis, the state governor, Ibrahim Shekarau has revealed.

The roads include France Road, to be awarded at N700 million and Sarkin Yaki Road, which is to gulp over N300million.

Shekarau, speaking at the flag-off of a special sanitation programme in the area, said the move was part of efforts by the administration to keep the city in tune with modernity.

The governor said already, billions of naira had been set aside for the government's urban renewal programme and appealed to the people to cooperate towards making the set goals achievable.

He described the sanitation exercise as an offshoot of the administration's societal re-orientation programme, aimed at ensuring that the people behaved in accordance with socially acceptable standards.

The governor condemned the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages and paths instead of the designated points across the city, saying the action was not only unwholesome but also capable of eliciting life-threatening diseases.

He therefore appealed to the people to be mindful of their environment by adopting more hygienic habits and cooperating with environmental sanitation officials

The governor announced that the state government would soon introduce a competition among communities in the state aimed at rewarding the cleanest area and raising awareness on best practices in environmental hygiene.

He commended the residents of Sabon-Gari for identifying with the vision of the government to make the society a better place for all, urging them to sustain their communal spirit to move the state forward.

Shekarau also commended their peaceful coexistence with the host community, describing it as outstanding and advised them to always contact the relevant authorities whenever any movement capable of breaching the peace in the area was noticed.

In his remarks, the president, non-indigenes Leaders' Caucus, Jimpat Ayelangbe, commended the state government for introducing measures aimed at ridding the society of the filth generated from human activities in the state capital.
