Investment in the productive sector of Nigeria’s economy received a major boost weekend as a furniture factory workshop valued at N700 million opened for business in Lagos.
The factory belonging to Interior Options (IO) World Limited specialises in the production of high quality furniture in exquisite designs for reception, bar and restaurant, corridor, bedroom, wardrobe, bathroom, sofas, kitchen, theatre, offices, chairs, doors and stairs.
Founded in 1987 as a limited liability company focusing mainly on interior designs and consultancy services, IO World had to set up IO Furniture Manufacturing in 1993 when local carpenters and furniture makers could no longer deliver the quality standard required by its discerning clientele.
The company’s successfully completed projects range from residential and 5-star hotel projects, to real estate developments for individuals, companies and corporate institutions such as banks, oil services and telecommunications practitioners.
In an exclusive interview with Business Day at the elaborate ceremony to declare the factory workshop open at their Ilupeju, Lagos office, IO World’s Italian technical partner, Silvano Guion said his business relationship with Hamza Atta, chairman of IO World, has given them the opportunity to make a special kind of furniture for Nigerians.
“There are many reasons why we came into this business and it has been long we started discussing with Hamza and (Muni) Shonibare. We have done many things together within this period. This relationship has given us the opportunity to make something special in Nigeria because Nigeria is a country that needs a special kind of furniture”, he said.
Guion noted that Nigeria has a huge market, adding that “the country is one that wants high quality and good designs, especially the new companies and the banks.
This is the future. We have been here constantly because this is a country with good future. The country is growing rapidly”.
Asked if he was not scared by competition and faking of products that were all over the place, the technical partner said they knew all that but felt that nobody was going to compete with their products in terms of quality and design. “You can’t compare our products with the Chinese products;  we believe that the market is for everybody, but we have taken on a section of the market, that is the high and medium level.
Atta also told Business Day that his company has had a unique relationship with Klass, their Italian technical partner, from whom they used to buy on credit until IO world was established.
He disclosed that IO World had a workforce of 100 men and women, adding, “in future, we will be looking at an army of workers because, production is one thing.
