A Belgian firm, Middlehoff Consortium is to invest $24 million (about N2.5 billion) in the Ibaka Seaport Development Project in Mbo local government area of Akwa Ibom State.
The cost of the project is estimated at $100 million (about N12 billon).
In an interview shortly after meeting with Governor Godswill Akpabio, the team leader, Paul Wille, said the project would be completed within 24 months.
Accompanied by Clementine Fauconnier of the Belgian Embassy in Nigeria, Wille said the project, when completed, would ensure the transfer of skills to Nigerians as well as boost small business development in the state.
Earlier, Governor Akpabio said the port would open up the country to the Gulf of Guinea, adding that it would facilitate the economic development of the region.
According to him, the benefits of the seaport development would be further enhanced with the plans by the State Government to construct a dual carriageway from Uyo, the state capital to Okobo local government area and that the road project would also be extended to Ibaka.
He said the ongoing construction of the East West Road by the Federal Government which covers most of the South South geopolitical zone would further boost the viability of the Ibaka seaport.
Some of the facilities to be developed alongside the seaport include a housing estate, hospitals, schools and recreation centres to cater for the workers at the port, the Governor said.
Other key projects being undertaken by the State Government include a Liquified Natural Gas plant, an International Airport, a Science Park and a 685 mw Independent Power Plant.
