Aviation reforms aimed at promoting safety — Minister
Felix Hyat, minister of state for air transportation, says reforms in the industry are designed to promote safe and sustainable growth of the sector.
Hyat said this Monday in Abuja, while declaring open a three-day symposium on “Air Transport”.
“I am pleased to tell you that the reforms have started yielding fruits.
“It is our hope that sustaining these reforms will also lead to a further boost in tourism, job creation and the enhancement of trade and investment,” he said.
According to him, some of the areas where the reforms have recorded results are the upgrading of infrastructure at the major airports.
Other areas he said included the emergence of strong, reliable and vibrant airlines which served not just the Nigerian market, but Africa and beyond.
The minister also said the reforms had led to the increased spectrum of service and price options.
“It has also increased the competition among the many more players,” he said.
He explained that based on the development, it was necessary to evolve a new regulatory regime to protect stakeholders in the industry.
Hyat said the development led to the establishment of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
He said the NCAA was a demonstration of Nigeria’s commitment toward the regulation of air transport to promote the efficiency and economic vibrancy of the industry.
Hyat, however, expressed regrets that one of the major challenges being faced globally by the aviation sector was the effect of aviation on the environment.
The minister explained that experts believed aircraft contributed two per cent of human greenhouse emissions.
He further said Nigeria was supporting efforts being made by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to minimise the impact of aircraft engine emissions.
The efforts, he said, were to encourage member-states of ICAO to renew their aircraft for cleaner and more efficient engines toward a safer environment. (NAN)
