After years of prevarication and politics, another contract for the construction of a second bridge over the River Niger at Asaba/Onitsha has been awarded—this time to Julius Berger, the German company that has handled most of the construction of major roads and bridges in the country since the 1970s.
A recent report by Global Financial Integrity (GFI), a research and advocacy organization based in USA, informs us that in the ten years between 2000 and 2010, Nigeria’s leaders stole from our public treasury and transferred abroad sums of money totaling $19.66bn (19.66 billion USDollars), that is, over N3trn, that is, over three trillion naira (N3,000,000,000,000)!!!
The best news of last week was that President Jonathan has rescinded his decision to change the revered name of the University of Lagos. As one commentator put it, this shows that Jonathan “has a listening ear and a large heart.”
