UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), on Thursday said it was working with the AU Commission to ensure legislation against cyber crimes. Aida Opoku-Mensah, director, ICT, Science and Technology division of the UNECA, stated this in Addis Ababa at the closing press

conference of the second meeting of Committee on Development Information, Science and Technology. She said cyber criminals have over the years considered Africa as a fertile continent to commit their criminal acts which had given the continent a bad name.

``For that reason, we want to ensure that an e-legislation protocol is developed under close cooperation between the ECA and the AU, and we will ensure that it is adopted by Member States in order to curb the menace,’’ she said. Opoku-Mensah added that the proposed legal framework would ensure cyber security on the continent and provide a way of monitoring, arresting and prosecuting illegal online activities and perpetrators. ``Cyber security in Africa would provide improved and easy economic and commercial activities such as e-laws, e-signatories, arbitration laws, e-commerce, e-transaction and other e-services which will improve good governance on the continent,’’ she said.
