Togo captain, Adebayor quits team

Tottenham striker, Emmanuel Adebayor, has given Andre Villas-Boas a boost by making himself unavailable for the African Nations Cup in January.

Adebayor, 28, threatened to quit the Togo national team if the players were not paid money owed to them by the nation's federation.

"If this does not change then I will retire from international football and many will stop playing for our country," he had said.

Following the failure to resolve the issue, the former Arsenal and Manchester City player has ruled himself out of the tournament.

A statement released by Adebayor's public relations officer Amedodji Blaise read: "Togo international and captain of the Sparrow Hawks Emmanuel Sheyi Adebayor hereby brings to the notice of the general public that he is suspending his international career with Togo team."

Adebayor has not been a regular starter for Tottenham since Villas-Boas took the reins this summer. He has made just nine appearances, but his availability is good news for Spurs as they target another top-four finish in the Premier League.
