Akwa Ibom International Airport gets implementation committee

The international airport project which was initiated by the immediate past administration in the state is expected to gulp over $200 million on completion. It has DynCorp of US as its main contractors while Gitto Construction of Italy is in charge of civil works.
Constructed in phases, the airport which construction work began in November 2005 has recently taken delivery of key facilities and equipment, including fire fighting trucks, maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities, preparatory to the commencement of operations soon.
The committee, headed by Idongesit Nkanga, a retired air commodore also includes: Udoma Udo Udoma, Edet Amaman, and Emem Wills, the state commissioner for special duties.
Other members are: commissioner of works and transport, Don Etim, the state attorney general and commissioner for justice, Victor Iyanam, Christopher Akpan, Ette Etteh, the commissioner for finance, Albert Akpan and I . W. Udofia.
Inaugurating the committee, Governor Godswill Akpabio urged it to scrutinize and certify all bills issued by the contractors for payment and ascertain the quality of materials, work and scope to justify payment of the bills issued to government.
In addition, it is to monitor and select contractors and subcontractors on any aspect of the airport project including determining the cost of jobs In his response, Nkanga, a one-time commander of the presidential fleet pledged the readiness of the committee to make contributions towards the speedy completion of the airport.
