Zuma Film Festival 2008: Partnership commitment peaks
The latest being from the French government and a motion picture production organization- Iyalode Productions, based in Atlanta, Georgia, the United States of America.
With about 15 weeks to the festival, the count down has indeed begun. Entries have started pouring in for the various categories, which closes on March 4, 2008. Zuma Film Festival is a biennial film festival organized by the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC); the objective is to boost the development of the tourism sector of the nation's economy by providing a platform for the tackling of issues relating to the development of the Nigerian motion picture industry.
This year's edition, being the 4th (others were held in 1992, 2003 and 2006), has as its theme: 'Film without Borders'. The 2008 edition intends to improve on previous editions in terms of packaging, participation and global outlook.
Further to a recent Paris visit, some French government agencies have indicated their willingness to partner and support the Zuma festival. At an engagement between the officials of the French government and NFC, precisely Patrick Madelin and Francis Beloguy, of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the officials were optimistic that the festival has become a platform that needs to be supported and assisted in order to shore up the giant strides being recorded within the sector.
The French officials commended the managing director of NFC, Afolabi Adesanya for the positive impact the corporation has been making within the last two years. The Annual SHOOT! training workshop, including the re-structuring and relocation of the National Film Video and Sound Archive (NFVSA) to its permanent site, among other programmes and projects were also commended by the French officials, who assured of serious commitment to support the Corporation to realize her mandate.
In another development, the chief executive of a US- based motion picture company, Iyalode Productions, Mojisola Sonoiki, has promised to support the NFC's Zuma Film Festival to make it a success. Sonoiki who has organized several Pan African film festivals in and around the United States, including Women of Colour Arts and Film Festival, stated this when she paid a working visit to the Corporations headquarters in Jos.
Accompanied by Gbubemi Okotie-Uro, project director of the Women of Colour Arts and Film Festival, and Associate Dean, Government and External Relations, The City University of New York, Sonoiki, threw her weight behind the 2008 edition of the Festival and promised to fully participate as well as source for entries.
In a chat with Sonoiki, the NFC boss assured that, this year's edition of Zuma Film Festival is meant to open up international market and business inflow into Nigeria. He averred that the time has come for international film practitioners to buy-into the Nigerian motion picture sector using the film festival/markets platforms. Sonoiki who was highly elated told her host that it was her desire, through Iyabode Productions, to have Nigerian film practitioners fully intergrated into the global film market, through her projects- Women of Colour Arts and Film Festival, markets, workshops and seminars. According to her, she has created what she termed "The Nollywood Platform" in this year's film festival holding March 21 - 23, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. She calls on the NFC boss to facilitate the participation of Nigerian Film makers at the festival.
Meanwhile, the Principal Consultant and Chief Executive of Adstrat, official marketers of Zuma Film Festival, 2008, Charles O'tudor has assured that everything is being done to ensure a successful film festival. The assurance was given at a meeting with NFC officials in Jos recently.
According to O'tudor, the brand, Zuma Film Festival, is a buy-in project, and that in the coming weeks, activities heralding the festival will be rolled out, impressively.
