Like every harvest, that of the Nigerian media industry for the preceding years apparently yielded a mixed bag, and this is not to say there were no landmark achievements recorded.

But, one could still ask, "where are we heading - tourism, culture and entertainment wise?" Although a few departments appeared unable or unwilling to keep pace, some sections recorded great strides in 2007. In the latter group, certain agencies --- the, National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Nigerian Film Corporation NFC) and the National Gallery of Art (NGA), Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) won not a few people's heart, which is why it could only be reasonable for one to look at the activities in the media industry.
A confounding curio of the industry is that, it is one of the least exposed or organised frontiers in the country, despite its invaluable importance on the socio-economic front. The Nigerian media industry, watchers say, could easily pass for an epitome of a national necessity, to the outside world, given that in spite of the abundant talents that Nigeria could boast of, precisely in the music scene, not much is known about Nigerian musicians. This implies that Nigeria as a country with enormous entertaining content has been losing in status.
The Nigerian media industry may have been losing for a long time, but it would seem that the federal government is soon to enjoy considerable outing, courtesy of Entertainment Highway Limited on whose bill the country is expected to have a stand at the forth coming MIPTV, featuring MILIA 2008 taking place in France. For example, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), would be there and Cross River State Tourism Bureau would bring along TINAPA and Obudu Cattle Ranch, for the world, to preview their hosting right for KORA music awards so that the state could make the music event visible to the world.
"We have also invited a few TV stations, including some print media organisations following the content which they have been generating from music, fashion industries among others." According to Toyin Subair, managing director, Entertainment Highway Limited, owners of Hitv, the outing would earn Nigeria an uncommon honour and enduring possibilities.
Each year, MIPTV featuring MILIA hosts people from some 1000 countries. It is the global content market for creating, co-producing, and buying, selling, financing and distributing entertainment across all platforms. It is also where the key decision-makers meet and network; forum to discover future trends and do business on a global level. It is a forum where over 13,000 world's leading professionals from over 100 countries converge to capture new growth in content for TV, mobile, broadband, advertising and the internet; and promote upfront to broadcasters, producers and distributors. The best ideas will be unveiled during the Zapping Show where guests can capture innovation from top level commissioners and competition winners. Hosted by Ray Cokes, it is open to all MIPTV delegates.
The organisers are writing the future, discovering the present during the "Content 360" creative workshops & conferences and Innovative Cross-Media Success Stories where high profile digital media projects have been recently implemented with prominent broadcasters and operators. Cameras, lights, action... and a host of stars will be back in Cannes to recognise outstanding achievements in interactive television across all digital platforms at the International Interactive Emmy® Awards at MIPTV. Now in its third year, the 2008 Awards will embrace the growing role of Internet and Mobile devices in empowering audiences with compelling interactive content and services.
For Nigeria as a country, it is very sad that the country has not been represented at such mega media festival. To such extent, observers opine that Nigeria as a country risks losing its content markets, acquisition possibilities and acknowledgement even as no mention of the country at such global market remains very painful, affecting what Nigerians do, as seen on Hitv.
Nigeria, therefore, being only noted for its wealth of talents is rather flattering, as watchers insist that it would have been worthwhile for the country to be present at such festival, especially because there is quite enough to go round which the global market requires.
Subair though maintains that the best way to market the country in the light of project brand Nigeria, is by exploring the global market with quality media content to be exhibited at the nation's stand at MIPTV, "not only as content provider but also as a destination for the world to explore, in view of human capital and different locations." He believes that the issue of not recognising Nigeria is easy to solve than that of the global impression about the rate of corruption in the country.
While the world could make use of the numerous Nigerian natural resources, they are by circumstances forced to go somewhere else, where there is artificial sceneries. "Having Nigerian contents in other parts of the world could increase the subscriber base. We in Nigeria have rich and unadulterated stories to tell. Having the Nigerian stand at MIPTV will from now be a yearly event for the world to appreciate. Hitv is to exhibit HiNolly, Nigezie --- and other 24- hour Nigerian channels," he assures.
The stand, according to Subair, will accommodate as much as 200-250 guests before which artistes such as ASA and Nigerian DJ, among others will perform Nigerian music.
In the last eight years, the music industry has grown considerably. The outing therefore, is expected to attract investors to Nigeria and create the opportunity for them to know what the Nigerian market is like. MIPTV to this extent, remains a platform to showcase the Nigerian culture and values to the world, bearing in mind that business acts as catalyst for national development; "after all, there is money and enormous talents here in Nigeria," concluded another showbiz impresario."
