Edo Dynamos women handball club of Benin on Monday won the women competition of the National Handball Championships in Makurdi.
The News Agency of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the team won all its matches at the competition to upstage the defending champions, Safety Babes of Abuja.
The team defeated Rising Stars of Lagos 25-14 in their final match of their round-robin competition to become the new champions.
The Safety Babes were forced into third position in the competition after losing to Defender Babes 20-24, with the latter winning the second position.
Speaking to NAN after the competition’s final match, coach Sunday Ajana of Defender Babes commended his team for playing to his instructions.
“They played to instructions. I told them that the second position was not good enough and charged them to play like wounded lions that they were.
“We came here to win and we trained hard to win. But we were not lucky. Our opponents were good and they took advantage of their points and won the match.”
On his part, coach Bala Mohammed of Safety Babes, said he was also impressed with his team but blamed their defeat on bad luck.
“All the teams here at this competition came with the aim of defeating us. It has not been easy. Each match presented a set of new challenges. But, on the whole, I am impressed with the performance of my team.”
He said the matches were a challenge to him to get back to the drawing board and sort out those things which were wrong with the team.
NAN reports that Niger United will take on Kano Pillars in the men’s finals of the competition on Tuesday at the same venue.
