This is coming just as the state government has approved the construction of 15 new water works with a combined capacity of 30million gallons per day.
The water works which is to cost the government N7 billion, is an emergency intervention to address the problem of water shortages in Lagos.
The 12.15 megawatts IPP to be sited in Akute area of Lagos will be solely dedicated to powering major water plants, chief among which are Iju and Adiyan Water Works. Both plants are responsible for about 90 percent of total water supply to the Lagos metropolis.
Besides supplying these two plants, the IPP when fully operational will also supply other mini water works, thereby ensuring a steady supply of water in the state, especially the metropolis.
Group managing director of the Lagos State Water Corporation, Shayo Holloway, told journalists at the corporation’s corporate headquarters, Ijora, Lagos that details of the proposed IPP are being worked out with the technical partners.
The independent power plant, which according to him, is envisaged to become operational this year, will reinvigorate the two major plants and ensure an all-round water supply in the metropolis.
“With this initiative, there will be uninterrupted power supply which means provision of uninterrupted water supply. Water supply in the metropolis and environs will attain an unprecedented level,” Holloway said.
The 15 new water works are to be located in Itire/Ikate, Ikorodu, Badore, Magodo-Shangisha, Mende, Ojokoro Jankara, Epe, Isheri Oshun, Ajangbadi, Ajegunle, Mosan Okunola, Abule Egba, Meiran, Oshodi and along Imeke Iworo road.
