ExxonMobil, Nigeria’ s second largest producer of crude oil, is yet to start loading from Qua Iboe terminal despite the strike called off by the workers of the American multinational oil company more than one week.
An inside source told Business Day that crude oil loading from Qua Iboe terminal for the month of June might be delayed for about 13 to 15 days.
The source said the period of the delay was the time frame that would be needed to load a ship, adding that even if a ship had been brought in it would not get enough quantity to load. The strike has been called off more than a week ago but the force majure declared in the wake of the strike had not been lifted, he said.
It was on Wednesday that the company reached the pre-strike level of about 800,000 barrels a day.
All of Exxon’s oil production in Nigeria, which averaged 800,000 barrels per day last year, was disrupted by a strike late in April.
“The Qua loadings are confirmed with delays of 13-15 days,” a trader said.
The trader said its Qua Iboe cargo to be loaded in the first decade of June was scheduled in the last decade of the month.
Exxon is the operator of the Qua Iboe oilfields, whose full production level is about 400,000 bpd.
Qua Iboe is light, sweet crude, with API gravity of around 35 and sulphur content of 0.2 percent.
The US major is the largest foreign operator in Nigeria, also producing Erha, Yoho and Oso condensate.
The oil industry, which produces about 1.9-2 million barrels of crude oil every day, has been hit by the strike and the recent spate of sabotage to facilities of Royal Dutch Shell and Eni.
The strike was embarked upon by the workers who were agitating for better condition of service and urging government to see to the issue of abuse expatriate quota as well as the stoppage of the use of causal workers.
The integrity of the company’s pipelines was also raised.
