Solution for off-grid lighting: Nigeria ranks second among African countries

Nigeria currently ranks second among African countries that have submitted the highest number of proposals to the World Bank on innovative solutions for off-grid lighting for Africa.

This is coming four months to the “Lighting Africa 2008”, the first global business conference and competition for grid lighting, scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana.
According to the latest report obtained from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, “over 400 proposals on innovative solutions for off-grid lighting for Africa, have been received from 54 countries including 38 African countries. The proposed implementation countries include Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Cameroon, Rwanda and South Africa”
A breakdown of the report indicates that out of the eight African countries that submitted proposals to the World Bank, Kenya topped the list with 12 per cent of total proposals while Nigeria followed closely in the second position with 10 per cent. Uganda ranked third with five per cent, while the trio of Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania ranked fourth with four per cent respectively. South Africa and Rwanda came fifth each scoring three per cent respectively.
Applications were obtained from a host of organizations including private businesses, non-governmental organizations, universities, government entities, and individuals. Proposals included innovative ideas for provision of improved lighting services such as new, clean off-grid lighting products; alternative distribution models; stronger value and production chains; and improved policy environments.
“Proposals are currently undergoing review by a team of international assessors; 50 finalists will be announced in January and asked to submit full proposals. The finalists will be invited to attend the first global off-grid lighting conference, to take place in Ghana in May 2008, where up to 20 winners will be selected and announced,” the report said
The Lighting Africa conference is designed for investors , financiers, private firms, end-users, and development agencies to showcase and expand their business frontiers the main objectives of the Nigeria ranks second among African countries conference are to increase investor awareness of the significant market opposition for improved lighting products and services in sub-Saharan Africa; to link global investors with suppliers and service providers to share business and financing model structure for lightning project and to showcase project opportunities.
The World Bank Group is the lead sponsor of the event. Other sponsors include Energy Sector Management Association Programme (ESMAP), the global environment facility (GEF).
