Highlights
The only way a business can grow is through people. People are the future of a company, so investing in staff is very important. The training given to staff should be based on the needs of the company and the interests of the individuals.
Coaching, which is direct training of employees by the owner of the company or other superiors on how a job should be done is also very essential. It is therefore important that a boss possess the necessary skills. As a boss, if you do not possess the skills, how are you going to translate it to staff?
The fact that employees can still leave a company after training is not enough reason not to train them. They should be put on Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) plan and other employees' welfare packages. Even a small company should have a human resource department to ensure that employees are well-taken care of. A human resource person must have empathy, integrity, experience in HR matters and other qualities.

Poaching
Once your company becomes well-known for good things, competitors will poach your staff. One of the ways to retain employees is to do profit sharing. This should be linked to reward and performance and it must be done honestly and with transparency.
Equity partnership
Usually when employees have stayed in a company for two years, there is an itch to move on. Such incentives as a car, a trip to a choice place or specialised training should be given to such employees.
After staying for four to five years, equity partnership is one of the best ways to retain them. At this point, the company must continue to look for ways to ensure that such staffs are well taken care of.

Factors that enhance staff retention
C.A. Doregoes who has been in business for about three decades says, "Master what you are doing so no staff will destabilise you. In order to attract and retain good quality personnel, the following needs must be met in this order: physiological, safety/security, belongingness/love/social, esteem and self-actualisation. If you pay salaries regularly, you can retain your staff. Another way is to allow their social needs to be met by organising parties at certain periods in a year. Recognition that boosts their esteem and opportunities for self actualisation should be given to them.

Good management team
These are the leaders who manage any organisation. They should be interested in how people can be brought together to work for a common goal, effectively and happily. Consequently, the qualities and behaviour of these leaders determine to a large degree how the subordinates feel about their organisation. Their style or behaviour may foster or hinder workers' commitment.
If you have God in you, when you pray to God, you will be able to discern those who are good people and elevate them to manage the business even in your absence. You can add to their salary a responsibility allowance in addition to fringe benefits that would encourage performance and long service at your company.
