The Centre for International Private Enterprises (CIPE), a non-governmental organisation based in Washington DC, United States of America, has indicated interest in supporting small and medium enterprises in Abia State.
Bronwyn Bruton, programme officer, Africa, CIPE, made this known at the weekend in Aba, at a meeting with officials of the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), Abia branch.
She explained that the ingenuity and doggedness of Aba entrepreneurs and the entire Southeast attracted CIPE to the region.
“We came to Aba because it is a well known commercial centre that is under-exploited. There are lots of activities going on in the Southeast and so, we wanted an opportunity to work in such an environment.”
According to her, in developing a programme for Abia SMEs, stakeholders are expected to make input, noting that CIPE projects are designed based on the desire and needs of the beneficiaries.
“We have fixed resources that we can distribute and the goal is to see how we can help develop the priorities of the people.”
She revealed exclusively to Business Day, the only medium at the meeting, that CIPE had a budget of N252 million ($2.3 million) to execute programmes in Africa annually.
Based on this, she stated that CIPE programmes were designed according to the potential impact the projects would have on the beneficiaries.
Bruton who was accompanied on the fact finding mission by Wumi Gbadamosi, a consultant to CIPE charged the NASME officials to articulate programmes and projects that are of important to them for possible support by the CIPE in 20 days. Also present at the meeting were Darlington Kalu, chairman, Abia NASME, Ukoha Ifeaka, deputy chairman, John Kennedy Osuala, secretary and Micheal Moses, financial secretary. The CIPE also held similar meeting with the Abia Market Traders Association (ASMATA) led by Uwakwe Okoronkwo.
