Flood takes over Lokoja-Abuja road

Flooding is wreaking deadly havoc in parts of Kogi State, creating tension and panic in the affected communities. Commuters on the Lokoja-Abuja road had a hectic time Thursday after a heavy down pour.

After the torrential rain, residential and business facilities along Lokoja-Abuja road were submerged.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Rosemary Osikoya, said that the state government was paying attention to the situation, adding that the ministry needs volunteers to assist victims and prevent large scale destruction, adding that some structures must be demolished to prevent the inhabitants from being displaced again.

She also disclosed that following the heavy downpour some structures in Ganaja and Lokoja areas of the state had already been pulled down.

Osikoya also pointed out that the major problem has been the occupants of the distressed areas, saying “when you tell them to leave those areas they become aggressive, saying they have been there for years.”
The Commissioner also said that already the state government has provided a place for the flood victims at Felele Primary School.

“We are looking at all the options. In some cases, we have to be forceful in order to address the issue at stake now. Sensitisation has been very intensive especially at Meme and Otikiti areas that are also flooded. Also, Adankolo area is already affected. We are just trying to establish something. The state is providing temporary locations for them. The Ministry of Health is already on ground to provide drugs. So we are looking at all the options that are already available to us,” she said.

She also hinted that residential areas particularly those close to the river are the ones affected
