Usman Gumi, the chief executive officer of the company who disclosed this in Abuja said the company was already deploying the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network covering five states in Nigeria while over 450,000 direct and indirect jobs would be created. CDMA is a "spread spectrum" technology, allowing many users to occupy the same time and frequency allocations in a given band/space; it assigns unique codes to each communication to differentiate it from others in the same spectrum.
The Unified Access Service undertaking, which according to him is in partnership with the World Bank is to provide voice and data service to 405 communities in Adamawa, Borno, Cross River, Kwara and Oyo states across the country through CDMA with tariff as low as N4.
Gumi, while disclosing that the company got a subsidy of five million dollars from the World Bank for the CDMA rural telephony project stressed that over ($50 million) fifty million dollar has been injected into the programme by the company
He said: “We intend to cover the country within three years but we are taking off from these five states to meet the World Bank requirement having been selected as the first Universal Access Service provider in Nigeria to provide telecommunication to un-served and under-served areasâ€
According to him, the company was awarded the contract to provide telecom service to three routes, which include - Yola-Biu, Ilorin-Yasika (through Oyo State ) and Calabar-Obura Routes, out of 24 routes mapped out by the World Bank for rural telephony.
The CEO who revealed that the tariff is as low as N4 within the network and N15 to other network noted that the services had already been launched in Yola and Adamawa while Ilorin Route would be commissioned in two weeks time as all the infrastructure deployment is ready.
He explained that the company is working with the Nigerian Telcomunications Satellite NigComSat to provide effective data base services to all government agencies at a very affordable rate.
While pointing out that the company has signed a contract of several million dollars with equipment vendors to cover infrastructure for the whole country within the targeted years, Gumi explained that the 405 communities covered for now are un-served areas with a population of more tan six million people.Â
According to him, the multiplier effect would not only be to provide telecom services for the people but also to help in alleviating poverty and reducing the rate of crime as a lot of youths would be engaged in the sector while men and women would also find solace in the project.Â
Gumi further expressed the determination of the company to provide effective and cheap services to Nigerians, assuring that the company would rather want to provide good service to those who have it rather than congest the services that will lead to drop call.Â
He said:“We are looking ourselves as second National carrier which Nigeria can call call its’ own†Â
