•Sign MoU with FG
Two of the three striking non-academic staff unions in the country’s universities, have hinted that they may suspend their industrial action on October 16.
Officials of the two unions told newsmen weekend in Abuja that this followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between their unions and the Federal Government.
NASU general secretary Peter Adeyemi, said the unions have had series of meetings with the minister of education, Sam Egwu, adding “we finally reached an understanding on October 8.â€Â
“At the last meeting we had with the minister, we signed a memorandum of understanding, which we hope to take to our various branches to see if it meets their yearnings and aspirations.
“Between October 12 and October 15, we would have concluded the processes, after which on October 16, we would declare what our next line of action would be.
“Hopefully, we will suspend the strike on the day,†Adeyemi said.
Also speaking with newsmen, Promise Adewusi, SSANU president said after the memorandum of understanding was signed, the union held its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Gwagwalada, FCT.
“We have since agreed that we will relate with all our branches after which whatever we agree upon, will be relayed to our sister unions.
“Hopefully by October 16, we will hold a joint press conference where the next course of action will be made public. There are indications that the strike will be suspended on that day,†he said.
Efforts to speak with officials of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), were, however, unsuccessful.
The three unions are demanding for better welfare package, implementation of 65 years retirement age as well as university autonomy. (NAN)
