There are only 15 medical practitioners ( serving and retired ) in Nigeria with the training and competence to treat persons with President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s disclosed aiment of pericardiatitis.
Also, medical infrastructure for the treatment of the ailment are in even shorter supply here, Ezekiel Ogunleye, a Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, who is one of such specialists, indicated on a TV Continental television programme, in Lagos this morning.

Following the official disclosure for the first time,yesterday, of the presidents ailment and the fact that he had travelled to Saudi Arabia for treatment, a great debate has been kicked up around the country, about the details of the ailment and whether it was necessary for him to travel abroad for treatment.
Ogunleye, who is a consultant cardiologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital ( LUTH ) said that of the 15 Cardio Thoracic surgeons in Nigeria, two were resident in Lagos. He said that before now, training in that area of speciality was not available in Nigeria.
Regarding the availability of the equipment needed for the treatment of such ailments in the country, Oguleye said:â€We are not there at allâ€.
The Cardio Thoracic surgeon, who trained in Australia, said he was currently invlolved in the training of local manpower in that area, at LUTH.
He described Pericardititis as an inflammation of the pericardium, a sac which surrounds the heart, adding that it causes chest pain and was mostly due to viral infections.
He further observed that it was not a common condition and was mostly found in children under ten years of age and in adult males.
The last case he treated was that of an infant on Tuesday this week.
A number of viewers called into the programme wanting to know about the ailment, its’ causes and consequences.
One caller urged Nigerians to pray for President Yar’Adua to get well soon and advise them not to criticise the president, “because he is our president and anyone can fall illâ€.
Meanwhile, less than 24 hours after the Presidency came out to inform Nigerians of the state of health of President Umaru Yar’Adua, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan today urged Nigerians to discountenance the death rumour of President Umaru Yar’Adua saying that he personally spoke with President Umaru Yar’Adua in Saudi Arabia today.
Speaking during the traditional Sallah homage by a delegation of the Muslim community in the Federal Capital territory (FCT), Abuja, led by Ahmed Yayale secretary to the government of the Federation, at the Aguda House, Presidential Villa, Abuja, today, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan said he has been in constant touch with the president since he departed Nigeria for treatment in a Saudi hospital five days ago and noted that Yar’Adua was doing well.
