SGF backs Jonathan as acting president

Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) yesterday gave assurance that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) would back Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President.

Yayale, in a statement made available in Abuja said, the federal government remains focused on the ideals of constitutionalism and that the FEC remains committed to keeping the system running, as it backs Vice President Goodluck Jonathan.

The SGF who disclosed this while receiving Ambassador Johnnie Carson, the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in Abuja, maintained that government would uphold the integrity and the values of democracy in the country.

Yayale described the visit of Ambassador Johnnie Carson to the Vice President and other top officials of government as an honour and expressed appreciation for the get well message to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua from

President Barrack Obama and US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, on behalf of the federal government. He said, “It is particularly touching that President Obama has recognised and acknowledged the pain of the wife and family of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, over his hospitalisation in Saudi Arabia

“We appreciate the United States for standing with Nigeriain our trying time and we welcome America’s occasional reminders to Nigeria on the right things to do in such difficult times.

Earlier, the US Assistant Secretary of State told the SGF that President Obama and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have asked him to convey their best wishes to President Yar’Adua and his family, as they wish him speedy recovery.

He also conveyed their prayers for a peaceful transition on the basis of democratic values and constitution. The United States appreciate democracy in Nigeria in the last ten years and hopes that it will remain on the democratic path, he said.
