How Nigerian women see investment in stocks

For the average Nigerian woman, money making is simply buying and selling of tangible goods. This has been the tradition as she goes to her shop every morning to open and bring out goods for display. This tradition is fast changing, as enlightened Nigerian women have devised other means of making money, this time, through stock trading in the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
For Okudolo Virginia Okiemute, a doyen of the printing industry, investment in stocks has become so prominent among Nigerians that it has almost taken the place of buying and selling on tangible goods. According to her, stocks are bought for the following reasons.
It gives profits without hard work
I feel that investment in stocks is a free business for all and sundry. You can start investment with any amount of money even without registering with any government. It is so easy that students venture into it without informing their guardians or parents. The fact that you can start it with any amount of money and could pull out by selling it whenever you feel to do so makes such investment very liberalised. You can start the business without discussing it with any body. As long as you have some money, you could contact any stockbroker and seek his advice on the type of stock you would put your money into. So it is not like the other form of business where you would be afraid that robbers could burgle into or fire gutting it.
It serves as income on retirement
Most people do not consider that a time would come when they would no longer be proficient to run around as when they were young. However, it is an inevitable moment that must come. Since we are aware such moment must come, it behoves on us to make provision for such times. It is in making preparation against such times that I decided to invest in stocks so that by the time I would no longer be strong to fend for myself through activities, then I would have some thing to fall back on. Retirement benefits are not made for everybody because not every body worked in organization where provisions for pension are made. In this wise, one has to plan for the time so that there would be continuity in one’s ability to solve aging problems. You can understand that the moment you are no longer strong to fend for yourself, most of your needs would be transferred to other people who may not see your necessity as the moment’s priority. This is why it is most important that provisions for such periods are very important.
It has no business risk
Investment in the capital market is an investment that does not attract any risk at all. If you buy goods from the producer or the manufacturer to sell in a market, you would not be comfortable until the goods are delivered to you. This is because there could be accident on the roads that could destroy the goods before they get to you. If such happen, you need not blame any body because nobody caused the accident. Another experience is that the goods could get to you safely but on checking, you found that the goods you booked for are not the ones delivered, this time; it would take you at least phone calls or transportation to get to where you could lay your complaints. Complaints may not be treated for another two to three days thereby eroding into your man hour. A situation may also arise where the goods are delivered in good condition, correct goods being delivered but the goods failing to move as expected. This time, you may be losing what is supposed to be gains without having any one to blame. The issue is not the same with capital market investment where you may not even know how the business is being run. Not only that, you do not know how the market is being run, you are not also bothered about the security of the company at all.
It is a business done with clear peace of the mind
Investment in the capital market is the type of investment you make and go to bed. You are rest assured that your investment would be growing without you making any contribution towards that. Imagine that you invested like N500, 000.00 (five hundred thousand naira) only, into a stock, you would not be troubled that Boye or Ndukwe could defraud you or not. This is because you do not have control over the money invested neither do any other person has. The issue of price increase for the stock is neither controlled by you nor any other person. Prices of stocks in the capital market are controlled by market hearsay which could be favourable or otherwise. In the capital market, businesses are done in such a way that transparency is guaranteed. If you care, you could be checking your account with your stockbrokers as often as possible. In this way, you would be able to know when there is either error in calculation or in computing your transactions, or under recording.
Another woman who feels that investment in stocks is a worth while venture is Cordelia Idon-Oamen, a teacher and accountant by profession. She said that a lot of things prop somebody to do certain things.
In her own case, she decided to embrace the stock market because she has seen what benefits a lot of people she knows derive from the market. She said, she embraced capital market investment for the following reasons.
It is a sure profit-making investment
The issue of making profits through investment in the capital market has been as sure as the following day. It has been found that the capital market would continue to give you profits from day to day. These profits could come through bonus issue where the board and management of company may decide to issue either one-for-one or one-for-three as the case may be. Another way through which you can grow your profit through stock investment is through dividend payment. In this way, the board and management of the company may also decide to vote some money for dividend payment. It could be N2.50 per share or thereabout. One could make some reasonable profits from investments made in stocks yet the stocks are not offloaded. The stocks in this way would continue to yield more profits without you having any contribution towards it.
Stocks could be bought to serve as pension or pension support
We all know what purpose pension serves in our lives. The purpose of pension is to serve us especially when we are no longer strong to go about to fend for ourselves. At that time, we rely wholly on the investments made while we were still strong. A situation where somebody who was living big while he was still young, and still maintains the status has only his investment as the secret. The adage that the wood one fetches during the dry season serves him during the rainy season is quite right as per the function of stock investment at old age. Most people do not believe in keeping fractions of their earnings for future use. For them, it is merriment galore. These kind of people would grow old and start to blame this man or that woman for not taking care of them. The stock investment provides the aging person a supplement that would serve him when the time comes.

The moment you are no longer in your employment, your children’s education ought not to be disrupted.
