Fashion retailers and top global designers were showcased at the 2nd edition of the GTBank fashion weekend, which has been described as one of the best fashion shows in Africa.
Designers from Nigeria, Mozambique, Kenya, and other countries brought the best of their designs and fabrics to grace the occasion, holding the audience spellbound with their choice of collections.
The two-day event, treated attendees to an enthralling journey across a wide variety of Africa’s finest styles and trends whilst offering small businesses in the Nigerian Fashion Industry a free and vibrant platform to connect with a wider segment of their consumers as well as experts in their industry.
Speaking at the event, Lanre Da-Silva Ajayi, one of Nigeria’s top designers who showcased her new collections said the event was special because it is Africa’s finest and hosted by GTBank.
“GTBank is doing a good job in bringing people together and promoting the enterprise. The amount of store here is great; there are enough people coming in and out today and that is amazing in terms of outreach. We had constant emails, everyone was aware of it. So, it is good for the industry. We can only thank GT bank for this amazing idea,” Da-Silva Ajayi said.
The designer said she has kept improving her designs every year and is grateful to God for the consistency.
“You should look forward to nice collections. My collection this year is for the strong beautiful women that wants to be the centre of attraction and that is something you should look forward to and that has always been part of what you see. We have beautiful colours and very rich fabrics and soft tones.
“When it comes to fabrics, I work with all, what inspires my choice of fabric depends on what I am trying to do at a certain point. My selection is a mixture of silk, cotton, organza, Lace, Ankara and everything you can think about. At the end of the day, as a designer, it depends on choice of what you want to design,” she revealed.
Da-Silva Ajayi said fashion in Nigeria brings people together, adding that the GTbank fashion weekend brings both the rich and middle class together.
Taibo Bacar, one of the designers from Mozambique who also showcased his collections said he came for the show last year, and that this year, he is showing amazing designs that Nigerians will like.
“We are bringing a collection that talks about a woman that can be seen in different state of mind and you can find this woman in every single country or continent. It is the same woman but she will carry herself in an elegant way.
“It shows the different outfits that she can wear from the morning when she wakes up till the moment she finishes. She can wear it in different colours.
“Fabrics are elegant, simple, good quality, unique colours and we also do accessories, shoes and bags, so you can expect to see our own shoes and bags. This year, we are not bringing sun glasses; it is going to be a lot of things that we could use. It is ready to wear but with a twist of a little bit of evening and day wear,” Bacar explained.
Speaking on his brand he said, “The brand is turning ten years next year. We have been around and we have been doing fashion week within and around the continent.
“GTBank fashion weekend is a new event but they kind of started already on another level. They have a lot of experience and I can tell that it is one of the best we have done. They really take care of the individuals and from the first contact, emails and the way they treat you to get here, the attention they give back stage is amazing and the venue is awesome. This is one of the best in Africa,” he added.
