The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) had on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike to press for the implementation of the TSS.The situation had prompted the House of Representatives to pass a resolution on Wednesday, calling for the immediate implementation of the salary.

"We appreciate the intervention of the National Assembly and other stakeholders on the issue.

"But we cannot meet the demand for immediate implementation of the TSS,’’ a top official of the Federal Ministry of Education who preferred anonymity, said.

The source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) today in Abuja that the House resolution was not binding on government.

"The resolution is a good attempt to address the issue but it is not enforceable,’’ NAN was told.

The official maintained that the government could not dialogue with the NUT while the strike was going on.

"The first step is for the union to call off the strike before we can open negotiations with them,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Education has decided to meet President Umaru Yar’Adua on how the Federal Government can implement the new Teachers’ Salary Scale, (TSS).

Chairman of the committee, Joy Emordi at plenary yesterday raised point of order 43 and informed the upper chamber that the committee had met twice with all stakeholders in the education sector.

She said the committee endorsed the new salary structure since it had been captured in the 2008 budget.

Emordi said the committee would be meeting with President Yar’Adua to seek his assistance for the release of money to pay the new salary structure and that the Senate would be briefed after the meeting with the president.

The committee had met with the Minister of Education, Igwe Aja-Wachukwu in an effort to find solution to the strike which enters its fifth day today.

On Wednesday, Emordi called for dialogue between government and teachers but efforts at persuading the aggrieved teachers to dump the strike have failed.

IT IS QUITE FUNNY THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL BE ASKING FOR CALLING OFF OF THE STRIKE AS A CONDITION FOR RESUMING NEGOTIATIONS AFTER A WARNING STRIKE WAS MADE AND THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO IT BY THE GOVT.

IT IS ALSO A SHAME ON THIS NATION THAT THE TEACHERS WHO MAKES THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW ARE SUBJECTED TO THE TREATMENT THEY GET FROM GOVT.

THE GOVT SHOULD ENDEAVOR TO LISTEN TO THE PLIGHT OF TEACHERS. THANKS

I hope this issue is resolved expeditiously with all involved sides making sure we continue to educate our children well. The strikes and interruptions are at the expense of the yearning children who need to learn. Nigerian education is already lacking behind. We have little or no teaching materials or equipments in the schools and classrooms. The only thing we have are efforts and knowledge of each individual teachers who must constantly struggle to find ways to teach and deal with ever changing education requirements, the ever escalating socio-economic conditions, and inflation affecting students, teachers, and their families. Most “Good” teacher has to invest own money to research, retrain, and prepare his or herself to better help the students. At Least, the government can be fair and do their job to ensure that our schoolteachers are adequately paid as on the recent budget. Our leader in the House and other branches of the government has done well in making sure they themselves receive the fair amount of salaries to allow them do their jobs. Please understand that as oil contributes greatly to our national development and wealth, our children and people of this country suffer and contribute even more to our national wealth. Without adequate investment in the people through proper education and infrastructure, we have nothing. Stop dragging your legs around waiting for someone to beg or please you while many children stay idle. Others would even start peddling and may never attend school ever again because of other unfortunate and unforeseeable circumstances resulting from your current decision. Therefore, stop denying these smart children the only things we have afforded them thus far. Stop ignoring the fact that our future depends on it. You may ask me how that would affect you. I can spend all day explaining this as a fact; however, there are few examples around you. Just look around you and see those smart people who use their brain for the wrong things that affect you today who would have otherwise been very good national contributors if their smart brain were directed positively through good education. Brain is never a good thing to idle or waste.
Thank you
