The multi-million naira Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to be sited in Tom Shott Island in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State is expected to come on stream in 2010.

The project, which is being developed by a consortium of international oil and gas companies including Centrica of Greece, CCC of United Kingdom and StatoilHydro of Norway, would utilise the huge gas reserve available in the state.

Speaking at the presentation of the project’s prospects to the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council in Uyo, the leader of the team, Simon Binini said the LNG plant would ensure a steady flow of income to the state, adding that it would also create hundreds of jobs in the industry.

According to him, it has an operational life span of 25 years, adding that with other projects in the pipeline, the venture will last up to 40 years.

Binini said the consortium had the technical expertise to start and finish the project, adding that they would bring their wealth experience garnered from working in LNG projects in various parts of the world to bear on the Akwa Ibom LNG plant.

According to him, the project is environmentally friendly, saying that they are encouraged to site the project in Akwa Ibom State because of the abundant gas reserve in the state as well as the commitment of the state government to creating investment opportunities in the state.

In his remarks, Governor Godswill Akpbio, who pledged the readiness of the state government to partner with the consortium for the development of the project, said other projects including an airport, independent power plant and a good road network expected to complement the project, were being developed by the state government.

"We are in a hurry to see the project take off, we have already prepared for it with our commitment to the airport project, a good access road network to the site , the independent power plant and excellent security", he said.

He said the state government had commenced a survey of the site area being considered for the project and would provide accommodation, shopping malls and whatever would make the investors and their families comfortable in the state.

The governor said the state government would sponsor indigenes abroad to acquire technical skills that would enable them be part of the LNG project.
