Nigeria records 760,000 abortions yearly, says Gynecologist
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that 60 per cent of that figure were unsafe cases.
Oji is the Country Director of Ipas, a U.S-based NGO involved in advancing women’s reproductive rights. He told NAN that about 10,000 women die yearly as a result of unsafe abortion.
“Unfortunately, even the government has been playing ostrich by pretending the problem does not exist,’’ he said.
He said that if abortion was legalised, most women, including the married ones, would not die from abortion-related complications. He said that it was unfortunate that governments had not intervened to halt the problem, as they were intervening in other maternal health complications.
He cited the case of blood banking system, which he said, was assisting to address the problem of hemorrhage after delivery.
“For eclamsia, a pregnancy-related hypertension, the use of magnesium sulphate has been introduced,’’ he said.
According to him, women and girls terminate pregnancies for different reasons, especially when giving birth to baby posed a threat to their lives.
“For people who want to terminate pregnancies, ‘choice’ is the most important thing and services should be provided for those who want it,’’ he said.
Oji said this would reduce the prevalence of unsafe abortion because most women would no longer seek the services of quacks doctors.
