The minister of state, aviation, Hadi Sirika has disclosed plans by the federal government to certify the Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport Abuja before the end of 2017.

The proposed certification, according to Sirika will ensure optimal value for our airports in terms of air safety ,and revenue generation

Aerodrome certification, in aviation parlance is a process by which a state can demonstrate that airport in its territory meet regulatory safety requirement on a continuous basis .

It is an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) strategy for the standardization and harmonization of airports services ,facilities and procedures as well as ensuring uniformity in safety of critical aerodrome elements, irrespective of the difference in ownership and management of such aerodromes .
By this development, the airport will become the second to be certified out of the 22 managed by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria(FAAN)
“The country has tried to certified our airport .it is a global requirement by the ICAO convention under aerodromes requires that airports must be standardised recognising that they will be under different ownership, climates conditions, system and values all over the world. it must reflect certain level of safety and security that makes it paramount and important to ensure that our airports are certified .

” Today we are beginning to certify our airports beginning with Lagos. This is a bigger plus and achievement than when the Abuja international airport was closed down for rehabilitation. It all boils down to safety.

” That of Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport is coming very soon. We hope that before the end of this year we will achieve that. Then we will ensure that all our airports both international and domestic are certified.

” This means means that their values will increase ,their charges will be lowered ,and then the world will be at peace that our flight are safe.

“if we come to concession, the value of our airports will be increased and we will make more money .

The managing director FAAN , Saleh Dunoma while briefing the Minister on the certification of Lagos Airport said “The economic and political significance of the aerodrome are numerous .This has been buttress by the new Partnership for Africa Development an initiative which was launched in 2014 to encourage aerodrome certification as a frame work of improvement of infrastructure in support of integration and development in the African continent.”
He said most countries could not meet up with the certification of the airports due to certain reasons .

“Following the Abuja ministerial declaration where ministers of aviation met in Abuja and mandated all African states to certify their international airport by December 2015.Most countries including Nigeria could not meet up.

“Nigeria started the process 11 years ago but unfortunately could not achieve it until due to several reasons ” he said .
He said FAAN is determine to surpass the already high momentum in the drive for aerodrome certification in Nigeria.
