Federal Government has offered to support states and individuals interested in ranching business with 3000 Agro-ranchers -which is a security outfit currently being trained by the Ministry of interior to secure ranches, and big farm investment in the country.
Vic e President Yemi Osinbajo‎ made the comittment ‎during a Livestock stakeholders conference held in Abuja on Tuesday which he said was aimed at getting lasting solutions to the lingering pastoralist- herders clash which he said had persistently created a security concern for the country.
“We want to encourage states and individuals who have are interested in ranching business with 3000 security outfits called ‘Agro-ranchers’ currently being trained by the federal Ministry of interior.Investors in ranching business will have their herders and cattle protected by the federal government at no cost”Osinbajo represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Audu Ogbeh said.

Osinbajo also informed s stakeholders at the conference that the Food and Agricultural Organisation, and the World Bank has also indicated interest in supporting resolutions arrived at during the conference, adding that,”Our neighbours such as Benin,Ghana,Central Africa, and Mali would also be collaboratively supported to adopt workable solutions arrived at by Nigeria in addressing the regional concern of cattle and herders clashes”

‎Osinbajo also pointed out that up to 13 states of the Federation had already offered up to 5000 hectares of land for ranching,as he notes that the federal government is determined to form cattle colonies,in order to feed cattles well.

The Vice President said,”‎We have 19 million cows in the country. Brazil which is 9 times size of Nigeria has 305 million cows, and they keep good ranches. 25% of Holland is for ranching, little wonder their milk export globaly is outstanding. We spent billions on milk importation, but with proper ranching,we could address that concern”

He observed further that Nigeria cows don’t do better than its peers, due largely to long distance trekking,as he notes that the cows are often subjected to serious torture with long walk from from Sokoto to Umuahia.

“Our 415 grazing reserves have all gone.We must encourage investment in ranching. Our meets are poorly handled because of poor scientific and inovative approach to herding. The herder is also a farmer, and deserves our collective support”he adds.

He assured stakeholders that the resoultions would get due attention of the government,as it seeks lasting solution to persistent farmers-pastoralists clashes.

“We conveyed this because we don’t have the solution. We rely on you the Miyetti Allah,Pastoralists,Government representatives,Catle rearerers to ensure we address these issue once and for all with determinination.India and Ethiopia had similar problems and they had solves theirs. We can do it with the riggh kind of approach”he said.
