Osinbajo calls for unique digital identity scheme for Nigerians

The Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo has called for on Nigerians to have a unique Identification under the digital identity scheme.
The Vice President, made the call on Wednesday at a one day stakeholders workshop on Strategic Road Map for identity ecosystem in Nigeria,
He said the system will benefit both citizens and government, especially for future planning purposes and security of the nation.
The vice president who was represented by his Senior Special Adviser to the president on ICT, Lanre Osibona, assured that the digital identity ecosystem roadmap is to be brought before the Federal Executive Council(FEC) at the conclusion of the workshop.
He noted that 25 government agencies have collaborated to come up with the roadmap which he says will be transited the Natioanl Assembly soon.
Among the aim of the digital identification system, the VP said is to stem duplication of identification and to share correct citizens identification data by various agencies of government without conflict.
In his remark, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Rachid Benmessaud said his organization is fully in support of adoption of the scheme in Nigeria, and is prepared to partner with the country to realize this goal, especially in view of its importance to social development and poverty alleviation.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director General of National Identity Management Commission(NIMC), Aliu Azeez, said the commission plays frontline role in rallying stakeholders in the identity sourcing agencies of government, adding that synergy among the different groups has been beneficial.
He called on to expedite legislation in the passage of the roadmap when presented before them.
The event was attended by private sector players, World bank, the European Union, among other stakeholders in the identity sourcing sub-sector.
