Pensioners union assures members of payment of full entitlements

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has assured its members that the Federal Government will soon pay their full entitlements.

The union therefore appealed to its members to exercise patience as they await the payment of all their entitlements.

Mr Actor Zal, the NUP Secretary General in a statement on Friday said that the union appreciated the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for the release of N740 billion to settle outstanding pension liabilities and promotion arrears.

“According to the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, who briefed newsmen about the release at the Presidential Villa last week at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting, admitted that the obligations had accumulated over the last two decades.

“However, in a different meeting held between the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), the National Assembly House Committee Chairman on Pension and the union on Wednesday July 19, we were made to understand that the liquidation of all pension arrears will start in earnest.

“We hereby appeal to our members nationwide to please exercise a little more patience as the government is ready to facilitate the payment of all entitlements through the treasury bills and bonds.’’

According to him, payments of the arrears of 33 per cent pension increase as well as the backlog of arrears of gratuities that are owed pensioners since 2001 shall be liquidated.

He said that civilian and police pensioners would be paid 18 months and 39 months pension, respectively.

The Secretary General added that PTAD would equally commence the verification of pensioners from the South-West and North-Central zones in few weeks time.

“The dates and venues of the exercise will be announced as soon as funds are released through print and electronic media by PTAD, accordingly.’’

Zal said that the NUP appreciated the efforts of Rep. Hassan Shekarau, the Chairman, House Committee on Pension and the Executive Secretary of PTAD, Mrs Sharon Ikeazor, for their dogged efforts in this regard.

“We call on them and all other well-meaning Nigerians to join hands with the Federal Government to ensure that this payment is done without further delay to assuage the pains and sufferings of our senior citizens who had worked selflessly for a greater and indivisible Nigeria.’’

He further directed all members of the NUP nationwide to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration toward equipping themselves with voter cards in readiness for the 2019 general election.

“This will give them the opportunity to vote for and against those who have been treating them fairly and those who have been treating them with disdain and levity. ’’ (NAN)
