SWIT eyes taxation minister as CITN inaugurates Ogun chapter

The Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT), an arm of Chartered Institute of Taxation (CITN) has declared intent to work towards appointment of first minister of taxation in Nigeria with a view to improving on taxation practice and administration in the country.

The statement was made on Wednesday at the inauguration of the first chairperson of SWIT in Ogun State which preceded 19th Annual Tax Conference holding in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

The Society of Women in Taxation said at the inauguration of Mopelola Bello as Chairperson of SWIT, Ogun State Chapter, that, “It is the dream of SWIT to nominate and produce the Minister of Taxation in Nigeria when the economy is ripe for it.”

Speaking shortly after her inauguration at Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) Multipurpose Hall in Abeokuta, Mopelola Bello, Ogun State Pioneer SWIT Chairperson, noted that SWIT was created as an arm of the Chartered Institute of Taxation to improve on existing standards in tax education, deduction and administration of taxation in the country, especially among women and younger ones.

She added that SWIT is an organ of CITN with a special focus on abilities and achievements of women in taxation, thereby enabling female tax practitioners and professionals exert their impact in order to contribute positively to CITN’s core goals.

The first Chairperson submitted that SWIT which is guided by the vision of leading professional women’s Associations in Nigeria, focuses on building a society that will promote the interest of women in tax policy, law and practice, in furtherance of the aims of CITN.

She said,” under my supervision in Ogun State, we will ensure tax examination and enlightenment, particularly for women. It is our vision to also articulate the position of women on tax policies and implementation within the key segments of the Nigerian economy.”

BusinessDay reports that the inauguration SWIT Chairperson in Ogun State was conducted by Teju Somorin, President of CITN; Ezinwa Okoroafor, SWIT National President; Adewale Oshinowo, Ogun State Commissioner for Finance as well as officials of CITN, while Abiola Sanni, Professor of Law at the University of Lagos delivered a lecture under the theme, “Taxation, Women and National Development”.
