Recall: INEC notifies Melaye, begins verification

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the verification of a petition for the recall of Dino Melaye.

Recall that the signatures of the petitioners were submitted on Wednesday by electorates from Kogi West.

The commission which acknowledged receiving the receipt of the petition, added that it has notified the embattled lawmaker over the petition filed by electorates from his constituency seeking his recall.

INEC stated this in a statement signed by National Commissioner and member Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, after their weekly meeting on Thursday.

The statement added that a public notice on the time, location and other details for the verification of the exercise will be issued on July 3, 2017.

“INEC has held its regular weekly meeting today (Thursday) and considered the petition submitted by registered voters from Kogi West Senatorial District to kickstart the process of recalling Senator Dino Melaye.

“In according with the INEC guidelines for the recall of members of the National Assembly, the Commission has finally acknowledged the receipt of the petition to the petitioners representatives and has conveyed a letter notifying Senator Dino Melaye of our receipt of the petition.

“The next step is to verify that the petitioners are registered voters in Kogi West senatorial district.

“INEC, will on 3rd July 2017 issue public notice stating dates, time, location and other details for the verification of the exercise,” the statement reads.

Addressing newsmen after their meeting with INEC chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu on Wednesday, leader of the delegation Cornelius Olowo stated that what was required for a recall was 50.1 percent to but they were able to gather 52.3 percent.

If the process is successful, Melaye will become the first lawmaker to be recalled since the nation’s democratic experience.
