Adedamola Ladejobi is a certified personal nutritionist and a weight loss expert. She is the Founder/CEO of ASKDAMZ, a weight management, health, and wellness company. She has used her successful lifestyle change and platform (both physical and social media) to touch the lives of thousands of people around the world. She works full time as a wellness coach ensuring that she explores her client’s greatest health concerns, goals, obstacles to achieving those goals and strategies to overcome the obstacles. She is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Nigerian Supreme Court with an LLB Law degree from the University of Exeter, a BL from the Nigerian Law School and a Diploma certificate in Nutrition. She is also a Health and Wellness Speaker who has been invited to speak at reputable events such as WIMBIZ, All Ladies League and Women Economic Forum, The Evolving Woman 2.0 and many others. Where it all started

I had a very loving childhood. Infact, my childhood was great. Coming from a loving background shaped me into the woman I am now. Loving, kind and always willing to give and help anyone I can. One of the most important lessons I learnt while growing up is that givers never lack and to always be humble.

Challenges while overweight and conquering it

I struggled badly with symptoms from Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and I think my bad eating habits and pregnancy were contributory factors. My highest weight was 106kg and now my average weight is 70kg so I have lost about 36kg in total. I had to make the decision to take my health seriously so I can be stronger and healthy for my family and loved ones. The mental picture of being too weak to be there for my kids and husband was a sole motivator. It pushed me to stay disciplined and consistent with my journey.

Coaching, speaking and experience so far

My personal journey towards a healthier lifestyle opened my eyes to a lot of things. I got to learn a lot about nutrition and the best ways to stay healthy. The more knowledge I got, the healthier I became and this also had an effect on the choices I made. It also stirred me towards exploring a career in nutrition and coaching because I have also gone through the struggle of being overweight and looking for all means to shed the weight to feel more confident. Hence, I can relate with most of my client’s struggle. My experience so far has been amazing as well as equally challenging. I get to deal with different kinds of people from spheres of life and I have to take into consideration that each person is coming to me from a different background, orientation with different weaknesses and goals. Each programme/plan has to be tailored to fit into each person’s individual lifestyle. Anyone struggling with weight loss needs to feel their struggles and pain are duly understood.

Major challenges of people who desire to lose weight

Based on daily interaction, most people do not take time to research. When you are in doubt, ask your doctor or a nutrition expert! Losing weight cannot be the same for everyone. There isn’t a one size fits all plan so you have to understand your body and find out what works for you. We all have different body types with different metabolisms. What works for person ‘A’ might not work for Person ‘B’.  Also, people are always in search of fast results. We need to understand that all that weight wasn’t gained in one day so if you lose it as fast as the speed of sound then you should be worried. You have to be patient enough to follow a diet/plan that works for you and trust the process with consistency and discipline.

Weight gain during and after pregnancy

My advice to pregnant women is that, weight loss, except for urgent medical reasons, is not advised. Pregnant women should focus on a healthy lifestyle change such as eating more whole grains, more complex carbs, good sources of proteins, great sources of dairy and healthy fat. They need to make sure they are getting all their micro nutrients such as folic acid and iron. Once you are pregnant and nursing, it’s not just about you anymore, there is the need to focus on both mum and baby staying healthy. Essentially, focus on healthy lifestyle and not weight loss and you would surely see the results.

Most heart wrenching story of someone struggling with weight loss that you have met

God led me to a young woman who lost her parents at a tender age and almost committed suicide because of her weight as she suffered from chronic depression. She was basically about to give up. I was able to intercede and help her get better with renewed hope of an amazing life ahead of her.

How expensive is eating healthy?

To be fit, you don’t have to spend a fortune.  Imported goods are the items that are really expensive not healthy food. For every broccoli, there is ugu, okra and spinach. For every strawberry there is orange, pawpaw, agbalumo and so on. You don’t have to sign up at a gym, even household chores count towards being fit. Also, find activities that work for you, or generally interests you and stick to it. Activities such as Yoga, swimming, dancing, football, tennis, squash and so on are also good.

Are most Nigerian meals carbohydrates hence the limited choices?

We actually have a lot of healthy Nigerian meals. Knowledge is key. Carbs are definitely not the enemy. Carbs do not mean unhealthy. Moderation, portion control and knowing when and when not to eat different types of food is key.

What is it about living healthy that everyone needs to know?

I try to preach healthy lifestyle as opposed to weight loss. A healthy lifestyle is easier to maintain as you incorporate beneficial and healthy habits into your daily routine. A healthy lifestyle leads to improved health, stronger immune system, weight loss, positive attitude, more energy and a better outlook on life.

In what ways do you help people achieve their weight loss goals?

I help people achieve their weight loss goals by getting them kick-started towards a healthier lifestyle. Coaching them on healthier food choices, food supplements and exercises that stirs them towards achieving set goals.

What is it that anyone trying to lose weight must know?

You are not a tree. With the right plan, consistency and discipline, you can achieve your goals. The only thing stopping you is you making that firm decision and getting to work on it.

What is your ultimate desire personally and business wise?

My ultimate desire is to become the leading online weight loss coaching consultant and be able to empower as many start-up businesses as I can. I also want to own the largest health farm where people from all over the world can check in for total weight, health and wellness transformations.
