iPhone tops 2017 best-selling tech product
The iPhone ranges have been named the best-selling technology product in 2017, according to a recent report released by USA Today. Apple the manufacturers of the iPhone sold more units than the four companies on the list combined.
Samsung followed Apple combined sales of Galaxy S8 and Note 8 phones, but only sold a paltry 33 million in comparison to Apple’s 223 million iPhones sold in the calendar year.
“Apple took a risk in introducing three new iPhones for 2017 – the top-of-the-line most expensive iPhone ever, the $999 X, along with two products that to many consumers seemed like minor upgrades over last year’s 7 and 7 Plus, the 8 and 8 Plus. Both the 8 and 8 Plus were overshadowed by the excitement for the X, which was initially sold out and listed for thousands of dollars on eBay,” USA Today said.
Apple launched the iPhone X late in 2017 in Nigeria. However, a Bloomberg report noted that the consumers’ reception of the expensive smartphone was less than impressive, as they all but abandoned it for the cheaper models.
Daniel Ives who compiled the list for USA Today predicts that Apple will have an even bigger 2018, with a spring update to its compact SE iPhone and more new phones in the fall.
“Out of the billion-plus consumer base of the iPhone, 350 million of them will upgrade next year,” Ives said.
Google’s Android system controls 85% of the global market share for smartphones compared to Apple’s iOS 15 percent, according to IDC. The iPhone however is the most popular smartphone in the world.
