Nigeria, Czech to strengthen ties as trade volume hits nearly $300m
Nigeria and Czech Republic are strengthening defence and security ties to tackle challenges at regional and global levels even as trade volume between the two countries has hit nearly $300 million (1billion Czech Crowns) in the last five years of diplomatic relations between both countries.
Indications to this development emerged on Thursday, when the Ambassador Designate of Czech Republic, Marek Skolil, paid a courtesy visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affair, Geoffrey Onyeama in his office in Abuja.
The Czech envoy noted that development of bilateral relations between Nigeria and his country, Czech have been excellent at the political level adding that both countries have very solid trade and economic relations in many fields starting with defence, security, agriculture and energy.
“There is always plenty of room to develop these ties further and we are also very interested in developing ties with Nigeria in order to tackle the global challenges be it on regional or global level. With climate change for instance it is very important that our countries work together,” he said.
He said that over the last five years, trade volume between both countries was more than 1 billion CzechCrowns, stressing that more investments will come into Nigeria as more Czech companies are coming to Nigeria to explore business opportunities for long term cooperation. “We understand that this is the interest of our Nigerian counterpart to develop transfer of knowhow not only in dealing with products but services and exploring Nigeria’s export from my country,” he said.
Geoffrey Onyeama, while welcoming the envoy, said the two countries collaborate in the areas of education, as a number of Nigerian students have traditionally studied in the Czech Republic. “We have good relations in the area of defence and security and we are looking to increase trade cooperation and trade volumes,” the Minister said.
He said further that through the Nigerian Economic Diplomatic Initiative (NEDI) opportunities in Nigeria will be publicized among the Czech business community and hopefully that will enhance the matching of cooperation between Czech businesses and Nigerian businesses and other areas. “We are hoping to strengthen further the relationship between Nigeria and Czech Republic and people –to- people contact in education, agriculture and trade,” he said.
