The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday suspended Ken Emekayi, the former factional chairman of the party in Anambra State for one month for gross misconduct.

Emekayi was a loyalist of the sacked national chairman of the party, Ali Modu-Sheriff.

The suspension was announced two hours after the inauguration of the ABC Nwosu-led Anambra PDP caretaker committee.

Publicity Secretary of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, Dayo Adeyeye, stated this at a press briefing in Abuja.

According to Adeyeye, Emekayi disparaged the NCC national chairman Ahmed Makarfi in a query issued to him for flouting the dissolution of all parallel executives of the party in the state.

He said the decision to suspend Emekayi would serve as a deterrent to recalcitrant party members, adding that the opposition party would no longer condone acts of indiscipline.

The party spokesperson said his case has been referred to the Tom Ikimi-led National Caretaker Committee for further disciplinary action.

He said: “An event took place on the 30th of July about three or four days after the three parallel exco of the state had been dissolved. A chairman of one of the parallel excos by name Ken Emekayi issued a circular summoning a meeting of his own exco for the following day, in clear violation of the decision of National Caretaker Committee.

“When the National Caretaker Committee heard about this, we made enquiries and this led to the issuance of a query to the erring former chairman Ken Emekayi. He responded to that query and rather than answer the clear questions that were asked of him, his reply not only showed total disrespect to the National Caretaker Committee, he disparaged the personality of the chairman and the secretary and issued words of abuse totally unbecoming of a person who claim to be holding an important office as chairman of a state party. We found this to be gross indiscipline. And today we took a decision on this matter, in accordance with the provisions of our constitution.

“So, the National Caretaker Committee at its meeting today took cognizance of the violation of the provision of Section 58 (1a, b, c, g h, i, j, m)  of the PDP Constitution 2012 (as amended) by Chief Ken Emekayi and we took a decision to immediately suspend him for a period of one month, in accordance with Section 57 (3) of the PDP Constitution 2012 (as amended)”.

This is the first suspension handed down by the caretaker committee since its inauguration at the Port Harcourt National Convention on May 21, 2016.

As of the time of filing this report, the National Disciplinary Committee is being inaugurated.
