Dalung assures NWFL of continued support for female football
Solomon Dalung, the Minister of Youths and Sports, has assured Nigerian women football of continued support, saying the game could grow better in the future with better investment.
Dalung gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja in his address at the 2016/2017 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Congress.
“Women have proved to Nigeria that they can play football more than men. They have demonstrated this in winning the main title at the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) eight times.
“How many times have our men won the title in Africa? We all know it, that women football has made the country proud,’’ he said.
Dalung assured the NWFL board that the ministry would continue to support women football in Nigeria.
“We will find everything within our limits to ensure that any project that the board is pursuing we will support it.
“But we also want the board to redirect its energy to grassroots sports development. Let us identify young talents.
“We need to go back to massive grassroots talent hunt to catch them young. It will help female football and it also will help football in Nigeria,’’ he said.
The minister acknowledged that sponsorship and funding had been the major challenge of women football.
“If you are going to have sponsors, investors and partners declaring interest in women football, you must make the league valuable.
