It was an exciting outing for professional and amateur cyclists on Saturday, as they smiled home with cash prizes worth N2 million in the 2018 edition of the Lagos City Criterium.
The event which drew cyclists from different parts of Nigeria, and held at the Dolphin Estate loop, Ikoyi, was jointly organised by Sustainable Cycling & Recreational Sports Foundation (SCF) and Cycology Riding Club.
The cyclists raced under six categories: professional male/female; master male/female and junior male/female.
Timi Abaka and Sylvia Odom emerged winners in the professional male and female competitions respectively, wining cash prizes in addition to having fun.
In the masters male/female category, Tunde Afolabi and Mercia Kamara came first respectively, while Joseph Ibaku and Elizabeth Obene smiled home as the winners in the junior category.
One of winners, Odom, who came all the way from Rivers State to participate in the competition, in an interview with journalists lauded the organisers. She said she was happy to come tops this year, after she played fourth position in 2017. According to her, the next target is to win gold in her category in the National Sports Festival coming up in Abuja this month.
Bimpe Olufemi, captain of Cycology Riding Club, said the competition was in the efforts to fulfill the club’s objectives of developing cycling at the grassroots, promote healthy lifestyle. She said with the completion the club hopes to identify talents from grassroots that can cycle for Nigeria at the international stage.
On challenges faced, she said that infrastructure for cycling was lacking, as the Nigerian environment does not promote cycling. Olufemi called on the government to come with polices and facilities that promote cycling.
Faiz Imam, chairman, SCF, speaking also, said things were beginning to look up for cycling, and soon Nigeria will compete at the global stage in cycling competitions. He said some 250 cyclists competed and over N2m was given as cash prize among other gift items like phones.
Imam disclosed that SCF and Cycology Riding Club have organised over 16 criteriums in Lagos and Port Harcourt while plans are on to make the competition bigger and better.
