President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday met for several hours with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), giving an indication that government and ASUU may reach a compromise to end the prolonged ASUU strike.

The meeting which started at about 2.40p.m went on for several hours and at a point the meeting broke up at about 6.30p.m, while ASUU members left for their vehicles to hold consultation for about 10 minutes inside the bus that brought them, before going back to the First Lady Conference Room, where the government team led by the president waited patiently for them.

The meeting was still going on as at press time, but unlike the previous encounters with government officials, the meeting with the president was devoid of the official protocols as both ASUU and government officials interacted freely.

At the commencement of the meeting, President Jonathan had given the assurance that “the strike will end today”.
